WSP Tanzania Launches ‘BaBaJamii’ Male Engagement Model in Kishapu

BaBaJamii in Action

Kishapu, Shinyanga — Women and Social Protection (WSP) Tanzania is proud to announce the launch of BaBaJamii, a transformative model designed to reshape household dynamics by turning men and fathers into active partners in caregiving. The Project Framework

Adapted from the successful Bandebereho Model in Rwanda, BaBaJamii (Baba Badiliko La Jamii: Father for Community Change) was officially launched in December 2025.

This initiative is a core pillar of the project: “Scaling Up Innovations to Reduce and Redistribute Women’s Unpaid Care Work in Kishapu District, Shinyanga” Proudly funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the project is implemented in strategic collaboration with the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) and REDESO.

The BaBaJamii model works alongside practical interventions to ensure sustainable community growth. Specifically, this includes the construction of rainwater harvesting tanks to reduce time spent on domestic labor. In addition, the project provides entrepreneurship and formal jobs training, all while fostering long-term norm change driven by the BaBaJamii curriculum

What Makes BaBaJamii Unique?

🤝 Shared Responsibility: Guided by the slogan “Tunathamini mchango wako” (We value your contribution), the model engages men in tasks traditionally viewed as “women’s work,” specifically focusing on domestic and unpaid care.

📈 Holistic Growth: By reducing and redistributing unpaid care work, we are freeing up vital time for women and girls to participate in economic opportunities, entrepreneurship, and education.

👥 Proven Impact: Our trained local Facilitators are already on the ground! This phase targets 240 couples (480 individuals) through a structured 15-week curriculum for phase one, which will be repeated for 15 more weeks in phase two.
